The Law

Courthouses and chambers often have portraits of past and sitting judges adorning the walls, a tradition that often extends to senior partners in law firms. In my experience lawyers make fascinating subjects - the width and depth of the different types of practice suggests so many pictorial possibilities.

This selection of the portraits I have painted of judges and lawyers includes portraits I have painted for the Vancouver Bar Association's bi-monthly magazine, The Advocate. In painting these portrait sketches, the Editor and I have encouraged all my subjects to be themselves and to share a little of who they are outside the courtroom – hence the informality in so many of them.

Note: All of these are painted 19” x 13.25” as studies, rather than fully realized larger portraits, in keeping with the Association’s larger collection going back over 50 years, which all follow the same size restrictions.
